60 years since then, France is set to celebrate the anniversary of the bikini, with due reverence for a garment that changed the fashion world like no other. Parisian store Les Galeries Lafayette is doing an exhibition in homage to the two-piece swimsuit and publisher Assouline has brought out a 396-page guide to its history.

The earliest bikinis were banned as they revealed the belly button, considered indecent in Hollywood at that time.

Bikini clad women now embellish beaches, but the garment popularized only when Hollywood stars Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth were photographed in it.
