Seeing the slow but sure emergence of Hollywood’s first lady, Katie Holmes, one cannot but help notice the similarities between her rise and the ascent that the late Princess Diana had witnessed. Just like Di went from being a shy girl-next-door to one of the most powerful style icons of the last century, Katie too seems to have finally grown enough wings to come out of her superstar husband’s shadow. Starting out as a little-known stars (Diana was after all the sister of one of Prince Charles’ “social companions” Lady Sarah Spencer and Katie actually had a few film credits to her name too before she met Tom!), both the women shot into limelight with their fairytale weddings to two of the world’s most eligible bachelors.
Just like Diana, Katie too looked too plain to be the wife of a major star. And just like Diana, she is now transforming herself into an icon through her style choices with a little help from her designer friends (Katie has shown a real preference for Giorgio Armani while Diana had been really close to Giovanni Versace). Gosh, Katie even chopped her hair short just like Di did way back in the mid-80s! Though the only twist in the tale is that Diana went through hell with her bitter marriage, subsequent divorce and intense public scrutiny of her actions which led the paparazzi to hound her to death.
We certainly hope that Katie is spared that fate and that she can only carry the torch of humanitarianism that Diana had borne in her lifetime!
