Kate Moss recently appeared on the cover of The Independent's special Red Campaign issue, with her skin doctored to look black.

Next to her picture was the slogan: 'Not a Fashion Statement'. Half the revenue generated by the Giorgio Armani guest edited magazine was to be donated to help fight AIDS in Africa.

The choice of fair skinned supermodel Kate Moss raised brows, and provoked a debate as the issue was dedicated to the hardships faced by African women.

Fashion industry experts said that an African model such as Alek Wek, Liya Keybede or Iman could have been a better choice.

Guardian journalist Hannah Pool called the picture - 'a cheap, old-fashioned blacking-up trick, and the fact that it is being used to highlight the battle against Aids in Africa is a disgrace.'
