Allergies are on a high these days and it is estimated that a third of us will develop an allergy some time in our lives.

A few years back, allergies related to cat fur, dust mites, latex, peanuts, seafood.....was a rarity.

But more and more of us these days are claiming to be allergic to something or the other.

Professor Mark Jackson, author of the provocative new book Allergy: The History of a Modern Malady, suggests that allergies have become fashionable and a way to indicate that you are a refined individual.

For instance, if somebody says that he has a food allergy, it might be his way of saying that 'I'm too sensitive for this modern, brutal world'. It somehow gives them a more cultured and refined status.

I am sure the time is not far when some of us will start developing allergies against each other only.
