Velvet is a great fabric that can be worn by just everyone. It gives you an aura of elegance and sophistication and is an excellent addition to your wardrobe as the winds get colder. Velvet can be rocked by college students and older women alike, although there is a conception that velvet is more associated with the latter.Here are some general tips on how to wear anything velvet.
1. Do not include too much of velvet
Never wear too much of velvet. It is a heavy fabric and wearing too much of it would be overdoing it. A simple way of checking is, if your outfit has more than 60% of velvet, chances are that you are going overboard. A 'never do' is to wear a velvet top and a skirt/ pant together.
2. Combine velvet with lighter fabrics
Combine velvet pieces with lighter fabrics like silk, lace and satin for a more balanced look. A silk or lace blouse and velvet skirt would simply look fabulous.
3. Do not match up with heavy fabrics
Do not combine velvet with heavy fabrics as this combination will throw the whole outfit out of balance and make it look very heavy and overdone.

Even though many consider velvet reserved for formal occasions, be bold enough to wear simple pieces for everyday. You would look gorgeous in them even when you are not in a party.
5. Choose from the popular velvet colors
Deep reds, burgundy, blues etc. are popular colors for velvet dresses. But do not shy away from bold colors like emerald green.
6. Can be styled as skirts , blazer or dress
Velvet can be worn as skirts, pants, blazers, dresses etc. and works well with most wardrobe staples. If you are not familiar with any velvet piece, try pairing them with staples like cotton shirts and tights.
a. A Velvet Blazer
Pair the velvet blazer with a girly blouse and dark, skinny jeans/ pants. The blouse should preferably be either silk or satin i.e. a light fabric. You can't forget to accessorize. Add life to your outfit with colorful flats or stylish pumps and some simple jewellery.
b. A velvet dress
For a fun night out, get yourself a short velvet dress in a dark color. If you select a color like deep purple, then leopard print shoes would go awesome with it. For the assemble mentioned, slip on a pair of dark leggings and stylish high heeled boots. Add a chic clutch. With that you are good to go and ready to party!
