5 Worst dresses of 2011

Asmita PrasadDec 22 2011

The year 2011 brought out the best in celebrities who dazzled us with glamorous dresses. The biggest fashion find of the year by far was the new Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, who turned heads with her stunning choice for a bridal gown and wore a number of high-street numbers as well much to everyone’s surprise. However, not everyone was fortunate as the royal bride and there were a lot of celebrities who erred on the wrong side of judgement and stood out for their red carpet fashion faux pas. Here’s our pick of the 5 worst dresses for the year 2011:

1. Louis Heal’s custom-made seamless frock

Lauren Pope seemed to reveal a little too much in this custom made seamless dress.

Who dared to wear it?

Reality TV star and model Lauren Pope

When and where?

The UK premiere of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 at Westfield Stratford City on November 16, 2011 in London

The dress

Lauren Pope left little to the imagination in this bizarre custom-made seamless frock by Louis Heal. The very saucy red dress had a sexy side split which unfortunately went up all the way to the TV actress’ shoulders. The reality TV star-turned-glamour model-turned-DJ revealed her sleek figure and the fact that she wasn’t wearing any underwear with a dress that possibly took a cue from Elizabeth Hurley’s iconic safety pin dress but managed to fudge it up rather royally. The dress which was held in place by a diamante clasp at the waist and the actress tweeted that it was “tit taped within an inch of its life down my bum”.

2. 1920’s-style Gucci leather dress

Who dared to wear it?

Hollywood actress Evan Rachel Wood

When and where?

On Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 at the New York premiere of the The Ides of March at the Ziegfeld Theatre.

The dress

This plum/burgundy Gucci leather dress with a high collar, bow and granny sleeves would have looked just in place at the grand gala on board the titanic before it sank. And even then people would have deemed it a bit dated! Evan Rachel Wood, the 24 year-old actress finished off the unique look with dark heels and a matching hat. Though a leather dress is very common in this season, we’re not sure wearing it in this color and this style and with this hat is such a good idea, even for the Queen of England, who has a penchant for dresses of this kind.

3. Deborah Milner’s cobalt blue monstrosity

Who dared to wear it?

British socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson

When and where?

The Royal Wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011 in London.

The dress

The royal wedding was a stressing event to dress for everyone who was invited to the do. Unfortunately, British socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson took the “royal” part of the royal wedding invitation a little too literally and decided to go all out in this oh so very blue dress. Carefully accessorized with a matching hat, gloves and shoes, the structured royal blue outfit made the 39-year-old long-term friend of the Prince of Wales (HRH Prince Charles) stand out from the crowd in a not-so-good way. The ensemble featured an eye-popping hat by Philip Treacy, elbow-length gloves and an envelope clutch bag all of which were matched to the electric-blue dress by British fashion designer, Deborah Milner.

4. Julien Macdonald’s cut-out frock

Who dared to wear it?

British actress Meredith Ostrom

When and where?

The 64th annual British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards ceremony held on 13 February 2011, at the Royal Opera House in London.

The dress

Meredith Ostrom possibly mistook the British version of the Oscars for a strippers’ convention and wore a breezy blue cut-out frock made by Julien Macdonald. The dress barely covered her modesty and looked like the designer ran out of fabric shortly after having finished the bottom half of it. The only thing more unappealing than the ‘60s-bikini top-style upper half of the dress was the horribly pasty and untoned midriff that the dress revealed.

5. Bizarre bridal gown by unknown designer

Who dared to wear it?

Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell AKA Ginger Spice

When and where?

On 22nd September, 2011 at the 6th Annual Raisa Gorbachev Foundation Gala held at Hampton Court in London.

The dress

So, this is what celebrity nervous breakdowns looked like! Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell AKA Ginger Spice arrived at the 6th Annual Raisa Gorbachev Foundation Gala held at Hampton Court in London in what can only be described as a bridal gown. The full-skirted white dress featured layers and layers of tulle on the flowing gown with the corseted, strapless top that dipped tantalizingly in the middle. The floor-sweeping gown was perhaps intended to look princess-y but missed the boat by miles. Geri’s has been known to have said that she doesn’t believe in spending more than £100 on a dress so we’re guessing this is an off-the-rack find from a discount bridal dress store.
